What is the Fair Labor Standards Act?

When it comes to employment law, the Fair Labor Standards Act is a policy that attorneys and judges live by.

We use the Fair Labor Standards Act to help employees protect their checks from wage theft. The FLSA is a federal law that states employees must be paid at least the minimum wage for that state. With some exceptions, employees must also be paid 1 1/2 times their regular rate of pay for overtime work.

How does that translate in Michigan? With certain exceptions, you must be paid at least $9.45 per hour and overtime for hours worked over 40 in a workweek.

The act also sets rules for how salaried employees must be paid , as well as standards for many other employment matters.
